The Pierrot clown is a stock character of the 17th century pantomime performance style named commedia del arte – Pierrot is the sad clown and became the alter-ego of the artist, specifically of the famously alienated artist of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries– icons such as David Bowie often referenced the character – "I am Pierrot, I am everyman”
