VIRTUAL EVENT: The Big Book Weekend is back after last years success!
A vaccine from boredom and exhaustion in the style of a literary festival takes place from 19th-21st March 2021 with BBC Arts after a successful launch last year!
The Big Book Weekend evolved amidst the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. Kit de Waal and Molly Flatt saw book festivals across the UK tragically getting cancelled due to coronavirus and instead brought a jam packed weekend full of literary fun to our homes!
With over 20,000 views over the weekend, and thousands more on catch-up, they were blown away by the response, especially when people from a whole range of backgrounds reached out to say that it was the first time they’d ever considered watching a book event, and that they wanted more!
And so, our wish is their command!
The Big Book Weekend 2 is coming live to BBC Arts online, joined by the likes of Philip Pullman, Candice Brathwaite, Lenny Henry, Douglas Stuart, Guvna B, Val McDermid, Julie Ma and Ruby Tandoh to talk all things books and arts across the weekend!
This is a free event and talks include:
- The Truth About Lies: Why We Love A Liar
"We tell lies all the time and hope nobody notices. But every time we lie, we give little clues away. What are those signs and how can we spot them? And why can’t we get enough of liars and unreliable narrators in our favourite stories? "
- A Big Book Chat With Douglas Stuart
"This year’s Booker prize winner Douglas Stuart explains what it was like to grow up gay in a hard man’s world, explores why working-class stories matter, and discusses the power of a good teacher to save a lost kid’s life".
- These Books might save your life: Brilliant books for bleak times
"Ella Berthoud’s The Novel Cure offers reading remedies for all life’s aches and pains. With help from the actor Greg Davies and Big Book Weekend co-founder Molly Flatt, she asks viewers to share their problems and prescribes some extraordinary novels that might help us all navigate the dark days of lockdown".
