AVON FIRE & RESCUE: Chief officer job ad

Avon Fire and Rescue Service is seeking an “inspirational” £148,000 replacement for its top officer.

Mick Crennell is retiring in March after a 30-year career spanning three fire and rescue services.

The new chief fire officer and chief exec will be responsible for a £58million budget and 800 staff and serve a population of more than 1.1million.

Mr Crennell joined Avon in August 2017, weeks after a damning report branded the service an “old boys’ club” with “deep-seated cultural issues”.

He undertook a widespread cultural review before launching a major action plan following another scathing government report in December 2018, which demanded urgent changes amid revelations of staff being “humiliated by their peers” and women treated “inappropriately”.

When Mr Crennell announced his retirement last month with “mixed emotions”, Avon Fire Authority chair Councillor Brenda Massey said he was “leaving with the service in a much better state”.

The job advert for his successor says: “The fire authority seeks to appoint an inspirational chief fire officer and chief executive to lead the organisation.

“In doing so, members are looking for an outstanding individual to uphold the organisation’s core ethics, values and strive for excellence in all areas.

“The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an enthusiastic and innovative approach to the leadership of an essential public service with a diversity of risk factors.

“They will also require a good grasp of, and commitment to, diversity, inclusion, cohesion and equality issues both within the organisation and across the communities we serve.”

The deadline for applications is noon on October 29. The new appointee will start on April 1.
