ELECTRIC VEHICLES: The first ever British-designed electric truck is ready for mass production

ELECTRIC VEHICLES: Electric truck pioneer Tevva has unveiled the first British designed 7.5-tonne electric truck intended for mass production in the UK.

The Tevva Truck has been launched to address the urgent freight industry need to electrify entire fleets of petrol and diesel lorries ahead of a proposed ban on the sale of all polluting vehicles by 2035 and the UK and Europe’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.

The global electric truck market was valued at $1.15 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow to $14.19 billion by 2027.

Tevva believe that by removing typical barriers to commercial electric vehicle adoption, such as affordability and range, the Tevva Truck will play a key role in helping the UK meet ambitious policy goals and create a new competitive advantage on the world stage.

The Tevva Truck has been designed and engineered by former Jaguar Land Rover Chief Designer, Dale Grewer, and former lead engineer at Bentley Motors, Ken Scott.

It will be manufactured in a brand-new 11,000m2 facility in Tilbury, Essex, creating an additional 1,000 skilled mechanical, software, engineering, and manufacturing jobs in the next 24 months, significantly adding to the 60 plus jobs already created this year.

With seven years of engineering development work, three years of in-fleet trials covering over 200,000 miles to date, production of the Tevva Truck is due to commence in July 2022. Tevva expects to be manufacturing 3,000 trucks per annum by 2023.

The Tevva Truck offers a range of up to 160 miles in pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) form or up to 310 miles with its patented range extender technology, which has now been upgraded to use hydrogen fuel cells.

It will be the first of a series of electric trucks manufactured by Tevva in the UK, with the truck manufacturer set to produce a range of BEV models up to 19.5 tonnes for the UK, European and Middle Eastern markets.
