KILL THE BILL: ‘Murder attempted’ at protest

The mayor of Bristol has condemned the violence which took place at the Kill the Bill protest on Sunday.

The Avon and Somerset Police Federation chairman, Inspector Andy Roebuck, told the Telegraph that he believed attempted murder of police officers took place after rioters hijacked the protest.

Speaking to the newspaper he said: “They tried to set fire to a police van with officers inside. To my mind that is attempted murder.

Protests on Sunday started out peacefully as a demonstration against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill, a piece of legislation which could give authority to police forces to introduce restrictions in protests and even criminalise them.

The legislation would mean that the police could potentially brand a protest a public nuisance, hence criminalising it. It would also alow forces to set time and noise limits to demonstrations.
