SOMERSET: New nursing home near A303

A new nursing home could be built less than a mile from the A303 if detailed plans are approved.

Chris Churchill, landlord of The Half Moon Inn in Mudford, has applied to build a 24-bed care facilities on the former site of the Lamb Inn pub in Horton Cross near Ilminster.

Outline planning permission was awarded in July 2018, despite concerns about road safety and whether this site was the most appropriate location for a care facility.

South Somerset District Council is expected to make a decision on the new proposals before the end of the year.

The site lies near the Monks Yard conference venue, just half a mile from the busy Southfields roundabout where the A358 joins the A303 near Ilminster.

If approved, the nursing home will be built mere yards from the existing Horton Cross Nursing Home, which is operated by Sentimental Care Ltd.

The site will be accessed from the A358, near the existing junction with Hanning Road leading to Horton and Broadway.

Councillor Linda Vijeh – whose Nerorche ward includes Horton Cross – spoke in favour of the proposals when the outline plans for the site were approved.

Addressing the council’s area west committee in June 2018, she said: “In terms of facilities, this location is better served than many of the communities within the area for which we actually grant planning permission.

“As a brownfield site I don’t think we’re in a position to leave it undeveloped.”

The council is expected to make a final decision on the plans before Christmas.
