LONDON CALLING: Manchester City play Spurs in tough season opener

Manchester City play Spurs in a tough start to the defence of their Premier League title at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The blockbuster clash is set for 16:00pm on Sunday as Pep Guardiola's men hope to put a few demons behind them, having suffered defeat at this ground on three recent visits.

The Premier League champions were defeated 2-0 in this fixture last season with Son Heung-Min and Giovani Lo Celso getting the goals. It was the same scoreline in 2018/19 as Steven Bergwijn and Son were on target.

Manchester City will be without a couple of key players in Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden as they both nurse injuries whilst it's the first time they will enter a season without the services of Sergio Aguero since 2010 as the club legend joined Barcelona.

Not that City don't have options going forward. As well as out-and-out striker Gabriel Jesus, they have the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Ferran Torres and new £100 million signing Jack Grealish. The latter provided more chances per minute than anyone else last season and Guardiola will surely be hoping someone like him can make a difference in the games in which they've struggled.

Of course, the pre-match headlines will be about Spurs striker Harry Kane who was the subject of an £100 million bid by Manchester City himself and is believed to be keen on a move to the Etihad.

However, that move is yet to materialise so Kane is likely to be the main Spurs threat as usual on Sunday along with his usual partner-in-crime Son. Those two have combined for more goals than anyone else in Premier League history.

Spurs will be under Nuno Espirito Santo and the former Wolves manager is known to favour the 5-3-2 formation so it will be interesting to see whether he implements that at his new club.

It is a mouth-watering opening fixture but if City want to retain their title and win a fourth Premier League in five years, they will want to get off to the best possible start.
