RECALLED: Ben Stokes named in Test squad for England series with India

PA -

Ben Stokes named in Test squad for England series with India whilst Haseeb Hameed and Ollie Robinson also return.

The ECB have named their squad for the first two Test matches against India this summer with Ben Stokes returning after missing out on the series with New Zealand due to a finger injury.

Fast bowler Ollie Robinson impressed on his debut against the Black Caps in June but was suspended after historical racist and sexist tweets were uncovered.

Haseeb Hameed has not played for the Test side since November 2016 when he impressed on a tour of India. However, his domestic form fell off a cliff but he has re-emerged since transferring to Nottinghamshire for Lancashire and has recorded an average of 43.73 runs from fifteen innings this season.

Rory Burns, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley are currently in possession of the top three batting positions and have all been named in this squad but their struggles for form may mean Hameed will get a go.

Yorkshire spinner Dom Bess has also been recalled. He had a difficult winter with the ball in India and was out-performed by Somerset’s Jack Leach. However, he has done well for Yorkshire in this season’s County Championship, although Leach would be expected to start if England go with one spinner.

Jonny Bairstow also returns with Surrey’s Ben Foakes out injured. However, Jos Buttler is expected to play as the wicket-keeper.

England squad for first two Test matches with India: Joe Root (Yorkshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Dom Bess (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Rory Burns (Surrey), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Sam Curran (Surrey), Haseeb Hameed (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Mark Wood (Durham)

The first Test is at Trent Bridge in Nottingham starting on 4th August and the second Test is at Lords on 12th August.
