SEASON PREVIEW: A look at Bristol City before the new season

We take a look at Bristol City ahead of the new season as the Robins prepare for another season in the Championship.

It will be Nigel Pearson's first full season in charge (if all goes to plan) after he arrived at the helm midway through the 2020/21 season and just did enough to prevent them from being relegated as Bristol City finished 19th. It was a disappointing campaign that had actually started really well under Dean Holden with City winning their first four Championship games.

The summer's business does not fill one with much confidence of their chances on improving. There have been far more outgoings than those through the door and some of the losses are rather significant.

Famara Diedhiou was last season's joint top goalscorer in all competitions but he has departed and with no other striker yet to arrive, it will mean a huge reliance on Nakhi Wells.

Jack Hunt was an almost ever-present in defence for Bristol City last season but he has joined Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday although the Robins have at least signed Rob Atkinson from Oxford United, who was in the League One Team of the Year for 2020/21, to replace him.

Bristol City have also lost Tommy Rowe who has returned to Doncaster Rovers and Jamie Paterson who has been signed by Swansea City.

Pearson has decided to bring in a couple of players who helped him achieve promotion from the Championship with Leicester City back in 2014 with Matty James and Andy King bringing a wealth of experience with them to Ashton Gate.

These signings don't seem to be enough to suggest progress for those doing predictions though with Four Four Two predicting a 21st finish and many bookies having them near the top of the favourites for relegation.

Unfortunately, it is hard to disagree that the Robins will struggle this year and Bristol City fans may have to limit their expectations to a relegation battle this season.
