SUPERBOWL: What to know if you’re new to American Football

SUPERBOWL: What to know if you’re new to American Football

This weekend sees one of the biggest sporting events on the planet take place when Superbowl 55 is played in Tampa, Florida, USA.

Even those who aren’t big fans of the sport will know about the event due to its highly-anticipated half time show.

It’s up to Grammy award-winning artist The Weeknd to wow the spectators during the interval.

For many sports fans, however, you may be tempted to give American Football a whirl.

Although it’s the end of the season, there’s actually no better time to get involved, according to Will and Alex from the Across the Pond podcast in the video above.

What is the Superbowl?

The Superbowl is the final game of the NFL season. It’s similar to the UEFA Champions League final where two teams reach the end and battle it out for the trophy.

There are two conferences – the AFC and NFC – and then there are four divisions within each conference.

Whoever wins their division advances to the post-season playoffs – like a football team who wins their Champions League group goes through to the knockout round.

A selection of three best-placed teams from each conference also get to reach the playoffs as ‘wildcard’ teams.

The best-ranked team in the AFC and NFC don’t play in the first round of the playoffs as they’re rewarded for being the best team.

Both conferences simultaneously play their games until one team wins the NFC and one team wins the AFC.

Those two then collide in the Superbowl to see who is the best team in the entire NFL.

Who made it to the Superbowl?

This year, the Kansas City Chiefs will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For the Chiefs, this is the second straight year they reached the Superbowl.

The Buccaneers, or Bucs for short, haven’t been in the Superbowl since 2002.

Also, this is the first time ever that a team will play in the Superbowl in their home stadium.

Tampa Bay’s regular home ground, Raymond James Stadium, is the location of this year’s Superbowl.

Which players should I look out for from Kansas City in the Superbowl?

The Chiefs are arguably the best team in the NFL with a host of outstanding players.

Their quarterback Patrick Mahomes is up there as one of the best across the league and earns a record $477 million over a 10-year contract he signed in 2020. Only Lionel Messi earns more in the sporting world.

On the offense, he has Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce to aim for. Hill is probably the fastest wide receiver in the league and Kelce is a reliable target classed as the best tight end in the league.

Which players should I look out for from Tampa Bay in the Superbowl?

You may have heard of Tom Brady before, he’s played in nine Superbowl’s with the New England Patriots in the past.

However, this year he left for pastures new and joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’ll be playing in his tenth Superbowl which is more than most franchises overall.

He also has some good players to throw to. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are elite wide receivers and can be expected to make big plays on Sunday.

Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to play with Brady again and you may see him pop up in Tampa.

The most important aspect of the Bucs team could be the defense, however, and if they can successfully pressure Mahomes to stop him from making passes.

When is the Superbowl?

The start of the Superbowl is on Sunday 7th February at 11pm.

How can I watch the Superbowl?

You can watch the Superbowl in three ways.

The BBC show the game live, as well as its regular weekly home on Sky Sports.

There’s also a streaming option, as you can watch it through NFL Game Pass.
